Wild West: Montana Horses – The Last Montana Cowboys

Tall boots, a wide-brimmed hat and a scarf around the neck, as well as an invariable six-shot colt – of course, we are talking about cowboys. During the existence of this profession, cowboys have become the most recognizable symbol of America, their images are imprinted in books and films, and the romance of the Wild West haunts many in our utilitarian age! In the state of Montana, the Montana Horses company operates today, which is engaged in the distillation of horses! Her workers are the last of the Mohicans to support a fading culture.

The era of cowboys began in 1865, when it was necessary to drive away giant feral herds of bulls, mainly in Texas, to theft. Later, cowboys drove cattle from cattle-breeding areas to the nearest railway station. Cattle were driven along the desert prairies, so meetings with the Indians or white bandits were inevitable. For a long time, the culture of cowboys flourished, but over the years, these masters of their craft became less and less.

The founder of the modern Montana Horses company, the Mantle family, actively supports American traditions! Every year, employees of this company drive around 300 horses from winter pastures to the Mantle family ranch with an area of more than 200 hectares. During the move, cowboys are forced to travel by rail, wade across rivers, and drive through many small towns. The path is about 55 kilometers, the “squad” overcomes it in three days. After the horses are delivered to their destination, they are rented for use in agriculture, as well as for recreational horseback riding in national parks.

Ron Emig has been painting with oil paints for over forty years. In the distant nineties, he became interested in the theme of Western and since then has been painting in this style. Grazing horses, canoes, Indians and treasure hunters, boundless prairies create magnificent surroundings and transfer us to the atmosphere of a real western.

Hard work and the struggle for survival, the history of the country and the new civilization. This is the life of honest, strong and courageous people who first set foot on wild and hostile lands in search of happiness. Such is the surroundings of books, films and Western-style paintings. Works about real men and for real men. And the canvases of Ron Emig transport us to this free, free element of the Wild West of the second half of the nineteenth century.

The artist has been traveling on the prairies for a long time, enjoying the charm of this picturesque corner of the Earth and looking for new topics for his paintings.
“Even when I was a child, I loved to draw horses, cowboys and Indians sitting at a desk. My parents were no longer even surprised to find me doing this. I painted them on every scrap of paper, and often painted my hands. ” Says Ron Emig.

In 2006, Ron Emig was named “Artist of the Year” by Mid Missouri Fine Art Society. His works are exhibited in many galleries and are beloved by the public.

And in life, the artist prefers the same style: a cowboy hat, worn jeans and a charming smile. What else does a real man need to charm a woman?
